  OVERVIEW

American patients are increasingly global in their make up. Some 50 million are culturally diverse and operate under concepts of health and medicine that are unfamiliar to most healthcare professionals. Nevertheless, we must effectively communicate with these individuals and families. The Cross-Cultural Competency in Healthcare Symposium equipped healthcare professionals to successfully care for some of the most distinct and underserved immigrants and minorities in America. 128 attended this first-ever INMED event, including 26 nurses, 5 nurse practitioners, 15 physicians, 3 dentists, 39 health profession students, and 40 others.

  OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this symposium participants will be able to:

  • Perform a cultural assessment during an H&P
  • Effectively communicate with culturally and linguistically distinct patients
  • Appropriately respond to the distinct needs of culturally and linguistically diverse patients
  • Provide clinical care with cultural sensitivity
  • Promote health literacy to culturally and linguistically diverse patient groups
Competencies: Patient Centered Care; Interpersonal and Communication Skills; and Professionalism
