Pharmacy professionals are increasingly applying their unique expertise on behalf of the world's most vulnerable people. Their roles often include important aspects of patient-management decisions, medication stewardship and safety, patient and staff education, and managerial leadership. The INMED International Pharmacy Certificate is designed to equip pharmacy professionals with the essential skills for effectiveness in this field.

  QUALIFICATIONS  

Enrollment is open to all pharmacy professionals and pharmacy students.

  LEARNING OBJECTIVES  

At the completion of the INMED International Pharmacy Certificate students in the context of a low-resource community will be able to:

  • Provide appropriate pharmaceutical care in a new cultural context
  • Develop culturally competent, collaborative relationships with professional associates
  • Support local pharmacy logistics, including medication acquisition, storage, inventory, and distribution
  • Assure safe and appropriate medication therapy for the predominate diseases
  • Serve as a medication information resource for patients and healthcare professionals
  CERTIFICATE EDUCATIONAL COMPONENTS  

International Pharmacy Certificate students will achieve the above learning objectives through the following four educational components:

International Medicine Online Course

This online course covers the topics of determinants of health, diseases of poverty, cross-cultural competency in healthcare, health leadership, and personal skills for cross-cultural living. Alternately, participants may also opt to take the in-class INMED International Medicine Intensive Course.

International Service Learning

Students serve four to eight weeks at an INMED training site where they are supervised by experienced INMED faculty.

International Pharmacy Presentation

Students will select a topic on health promotion or disease prevention relevant to their training site and make a 30-minute educational presentation to the staff at that training site. The student's supervisor will advise in selecting the topic and developing content of this presentation.

International Pharmacy Essay

The Essay is designed to help students clarify their personal position on the greatest issues surrounding international pharmacy. It requires thoughtful responses to several questions, is submitted via e-mail, and requires about two hours to complete.

  CERTIFICATE EVALUATION  

Assessment of student's attainment of the learning objectives will be based upon:

International Medicine On-line Course Examination

The on-line examination consists of multiple-choice and short answer questions.

Training Site Faculty Evaluation

Supervising faculty at the INMED International Pharmacy Training Site will submit a written evaluation of student's performance with attention to the above learning objectives.

Essay Evaluation

At the completion of their service learning experience, students will receive guidelines for authoring an essay regarding insights they have developed into international health issues.

  CERTIFICATION  

Students who successfully complete the above course of study will receive the INMED International Pharmacy Certificate. Verification of the educational experience will be provided to the student's affiliated school or residency program.
