Concern over healthcare for people on the margins of society continues to grow, fueled by economic globalization, worldwide news coverage, and the ease with which an epidemic or disaster in distant lands can affect other nations within hours. There also exists a heartening sense of caring that motivates individuals to respond with compassion and action to those who are most in need. The INMED International Public Health Certificate is designed to equip such individuals with the essential skills for effectiveness in this field.
Enrollment is open to all healthcare professionals and healthcare profession students.
At the completion of the International Public Health Certificate students in the context of a low-resource community will be able to:
International Public Health Certificate students will achieve the above learning objectives through the following four educational components: International Public Health Online Course This online course covers the topics of determinants of health, diseases of poverty, cross-cultural competency in healthcare, health leadership, and personal skills for cross-cultural living. Alternately, participants may also opt to take the in-class INMED International Public Health Intensive Course. International Service Learning Students serve four to eight weeks at an INMED Training Site where they are supervised by experienced INMED faculty. International Public Health Presentation Students will select a topic on health promotion or disease prevention relevant to their training site and make a 30-minute educational presentation to the staff at that training site. The student's supervisor will advise in selecting the topic and developing content of this presentation. International Public Health Essay The Essay is designed to help students clarify their personal position on the greatest issues surrounding international public health. It requires thoughtful responses to several questions, is submitted via e-mail, and requires about two hours to complete.
Assessment of student's attainment of the learning objectives will be based upon: International Public On-line Course Examination The on-line examination includes a variety of interactive questions and responses. Training Site Faculty Evaluation Supervising faculty at the INMED International Medicine Training Site will submit a written evaluation of student's performance with attention to the above learning objectives. Essay Evaluation At the completion of their service learning experience, students will receive guidelines for authoring an essay regarding insights they have developed into international health issues.
Students who successfully complete the above course of study will receive the INMED International Public Health Certificate. Verification of the educational experience will be provided to the student's affiliated school or residency program. |
