This program is designed for those healthcare professionals who wish to complement their education with both academic skills and field experience in international public health. Equipped in this way, recipients of the INMED International Public Health Diploma will be prepared to lead comprehensive health promotion efforts in low-resource communities.
Enrollment is open to all healthcare professionals and healthcare profession students.
At the completion of the International Public Health Diploma, students in the context of a low-resource community will be able to:
International Public Health Diploma students will achieve the above learning objectives through the following four educational components: International Public Health Intensive Hybrid Course This course combines active on-line learning with in-class skill sessions to facilitate comprehensive attainment of the core competencies in this field. International Service Learning Students and residents serve four to eight weeks at an INMED training site where they are supervised by experienced INMED faculty. Responsibilities may include inpatient care, outpatient clinic, obstetrics, night duty, and participation in research, public health, and primary care activities. This service learning opportunity is also available to practicing healthcare professionals, who must participate for a minimum of two continuous weeks. International Public Health Presentation Students will select a topic on health promotion or disease management relevant to their training site and make a 30-minute educational presentation to the staff at that training site. The student's supervisor will advise in selecting the topic and developing content of this presentation. International Public Health Essay The Essay is designed to help students clarify their personal position on the greatest issues surrounding international medicine. It requires thoughtful responses to several questions, is submitted via e-mail, and requires about two hours to complete.
Assessment of student's attainment of the learning objectives will be based upon: International Public Health Intensive Hybrid Course Evaluation This is composed of Self-Paced Course exams, article discussions, essays, class participation, and final examination. Training Site Faculty Evaluation Supervising faculty at the INMED International Public Health Training Site will submit a written evaluation of student's performance with attention to the above learning objectives. Essay Evaluation At the completion of their service learning experience, students will receive guidelines for authoring an essay regarding insights they have developed into international health issues.
Students who successfully complete the above course of study will receive the INMED International Public Health Diploma. Verification of the educational experience will be provided to the student's affiliated school or residency program. Graduates are entitled to include initials D.I.P.H. (Diploma in International Public Health) following their names.
