Overview

INMED cooperates with health facilities around the world to provide INMED learners with exceptional, supervised service and learning experiences. Within this context, INMED learners enjoy the opportunity to develop judgment and expertise as they apply principles into actual practice. Selection of INMED Service-Learning Sites is made with attention to safety, accessibility, instructor credentials, ease of communications, former learners’ evaluations, and the welfare of the local communities. On location, responsibilities will be customized to the learners skill set, and may include health promotion projects, public health research, health system administration, medical and nursing education, and direct patient care. Satisfactory completion of all International Service-Learning requirements earns 5 credit hours.

Prerequisites

Participants in Service-Learning must already be accepted into the Master’s Degree in International Health, or the Graduate Diploma in International Medicine, Nursing or Public Health. All participants are advised to read through the Service-Learning FAQs in their entirety.

The Graduate Certificate Course in International Medicine or Nursing or Public Health must be completed prior to departing for International Service-Learning. Medical students must also first complete their school’s core clinical rotations in surgery, OB-GYN, pediatrics and internal medicine.

Competency Objectives

At the completion of the INMED International Service-Learning learners will

demonstrate through simulation and actual practice increasing skill in:

  • Management and prevention of leading diseases of poverty
  • Proficiency in clinical skills useful in low-resource settings
  • Skill in community-wide health promotion and death/disability prevention
  • Culturally appropriate healthcare
  • Transfer of healthcare skills to other personnel
  • Appropriate personal adjustments for living in this context.

Depending upon the nature of the specific Service-Learning site, learners may also demonstrate through simulation and actual practice increasing skill in:

  • Care for the health of pregnant women and newborns
  • Proficiency in disaster mitigation and response
  • Design and implementation of team-lead healthcare interventions
