Dr. Cook, thank you for brining up the limitations of Stepladders as a key variable being inconsistencies of life. Very important analysis.
May 9, 2022 at 1:16 pm in reply to: Lifestyle Health Week 8 Book Discussion Forum: “Stick With It,” Chapter 9 #47459Micah FlintParticipantEmma, the calendar approach is great. It is part of a plan. The use of a plan has demonstrated to be a validated approach to achieving a goal.

Micah FlintParticipantGreat responses! A Kansas City preventative cardiologist physician Dr. O’Keefe did a TEDx Talk on the topic. If you have time please watch: https://youtu.be/FPz5_esb2ZM
Micah FlintParticipantThese posts are excellent. Burnout and compassion fatigue in healthcare is complex. The complexity includes industry/system challenges, moral insults, evolution of technology, influence of money and politics in patient care, the work, consumer-based healthcare and so on……
In my opinion the greatest tragedy in healthcare is reduction of physician influence in decision making and advocacy. Practicing physicians and healthcare team members who still provide patient care need to retake their roles as leaders, advocates, and decision makers.

His book is about acts of love. He mentions that many of us get stuck in analysis mode. His approach is just start and work out the details later.

People are equating eating healthy with you and what a privilege position that is to be in. Essentially, they are stating they respect your knowledge, input, and encouragement. I am not sure who stated it but your post reminded me of the quote, Tell me who you hang out with and I will tell you who you will become….

April 26, 2022 at 10:57 am in reply to: Lifestyle Health Week 6 Book Discussion Forum: “Stick With It” Chapter 6 #47274Micah FlintParticipantDr. Kovac, I really like your goal to smile! A few months ago I ran across the article in Forbes about smiling and really appreciated it. Not only is a smile a gift to others, it is also a benefit to yourself. https://www.forbes.com/sites/bryanrobinson/2020/08/13/new-study-shows-forming-a-simple-smile-tricks-your-mind-into-a-positive-workday-mood/?sh=ed493f327694
Micah FlintParticipantAccording to the CDC, around 70 million Americans have chronic sleep problems. (https://www.cdc.gov/sleep/about_us.html#:~:text=About%2070%20million%20Americans%20suffer,costs%2C%20and%20lost%20work%20productivity.)
More attention has been given to sleep hygiene. Studies have shown the physiological impairments from acute and chronic sleep deprivation among health professionals. This includes slower cognitive function and higher levels of cortisol. There are plenty of studies that demonstrate long-term health consequences from acute ad chronic sleep deprivation. In healthcare, sleep deprivation is associated with medical errors and may increase in poor patient outcomes.
I am pleased to see, in your responses, the emphasis on routine. This is key to proper sleep hygiene. This one page pdf provides other great tips for sleep hygiene: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/viewer.html?pdfurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cci.health.wa.gov.au%2F~%2Fmedia%2FCCI%2FMental-Health-Professionals%2FSleep%2FSleep—Information-Sheets%2FSleep-Information-Sheet—04—Sleep-Hygiene.pdf&clen=85637&chunk=true&pdffilename=Sleep%20Information%20Sheet%20-%2004%20-%20Sleep%20Hygiene.pdf

April 12, 2022 at 12:16 pm in reply to: Lifestyle Health Week 4 Book Discussion Forum: “Stick With It” Chapter 4 #47119Micah FlintParticipantDr. Kovac, I appreciate you using technology to track steps. Simple but excellent way to set goals and accomplish them. I too double check my doors, especially garage door. It’s a habit I struggle to let go.
April 12, 2022 at 12:12 pm in reply to: Lifestyle Health Week 4 Book Discussion Forum: “Stick With It” Chapter 4 #47118Micah FlintParticipantEdwin, I like your strategy for improving sleep hygiene. Setting a schedule and reducing screen time are essentially for good sleep hygiene. I recently read this article on physician sleep and circadian disorders and physician burnout. I believe this is a significant issue in burnout rates that is not adequately recognized in the healthcare sector: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6859241/
April 12, 2022 at 12:06 pm in reply to: Lifestyle Health Week 4 Book Discussion Forum: “Stick With It” Chapter 4 #47117Micah FlintParticipantDr. Cook, yes reduce social media time! Very hard to do in our culture….I did this a year ago when I saw how much time I spent scrolling through social media. I also appreciate your approach to increasing vegetables in your daily nutrition by developing a plan and strategy even with your busy schedule.
