I am with you Edwin. Our diets shouldn’t be so restrictive that we neglect to enjoy our food. Food has cultural significance and meanings. Sharing good food with family or friends and enjoying good food is extremely important.

Dr. Kovac, I like your 3 goals – more fiber; eat breakfast; and drink more water. This is an excellent approach. Eating more fiber provides high dense calories and increase feeling of satiety. There are numerous studies showing the benefits of eating breakfast to prevent overeating and overall health. Thank you for also mentioning water intake. Many are consuming many daily calories from drinks and missing out on the benefits of adequate daily water intake.

Dr. Cook, great job on identifying moderation and impulse control specific to calorie intake. I also like your approach to identifying your “treats” and having a plan to stick with it. A healthy lifestyle does not suggest completely eliminating foods that you find enjoyable; but to use them as treats or special occasions.

Emma, thank you for mentioning that planning and preparation is key to a healthy diet! Meal and snack planning can be extremely difficult for healthcare professionals due to the nature of work, hours, and unpredictability. Planning for “extras” and staying focused on timing will be imperative to a consistent healthy diet.

Edwin, you point out an extremely important topic, the influence of peers to push you. This can be both a positive and negative influence, depending on how it affects each individual of the community. I have also found that when engaging in an exercise or sport I will push myself. It could be the instinctive nature of male competition.

Dr. Kovac, thank you for sharing your story. I greatly appreciate your insight on your work community and the importance of in-person communication and engagement. I also agree, while Zoom provides great technology, humans need personal interaction for overall health. I also like how you identified two separate but important communities. Community of work and community of family. You have a distinct role and place in each of these communities that benefit both you and the community as a whole.

Dr. Cook, I agree having peers to engage, relate to, and find inspiration is key to overall success. A good community will provide accountability, encouragement, and be some of the best cheerleaders for your success.

Emma, I agree the community or culture of a community can be challenging when pursuing a healthy lifestyle. Identifying and engaging in like-minded people is key, especially in such a setting.

Excellent responses. On Tuesday, let’s plan on discussing question 2 in more depth. In preparation, please consider making a list of potential variables/barriers and ideas to address these barriers.

Edwin thank you for mentioning resource limited settings as a variable that can influence success. We continue to discuss that topic within this course and hope we can creatively think of options to address this variable.

Dr. Cook, great work with setting the goal, time frame, and strategy to accomplish it. Other than posting on this thread, what other strategies are you using to daily reinforce this goal?

Dr. Kovac, excellent job on your behavior change goal and strategy. I like your approach to starting with an attainable goal. In my experience starting with an attainable goal has been the most difficult. We like to shoot for the stars in our goals (not a bad thing) and when we don’t achieve them we see that as failure. This can lead to discouragement and eventually giving up. Being realistic and setting attainable goals lead to small wins that gives confidence eventually to set bigger goals and wins later on. Nice work!

Emma, you are correct the author is focused on using this process to making lasting behavioral changes. Whether those changes are inward or influencing others to make these changes. Dr. Young’s researched strategies and tools provide an excellent evidence-based approach.

Edwin thank you for your response. Yes, sleep is critical to physical, mental and emotional health. Studies have shown improved patient outcomes when providers have received adequate sleep. I found this article interesting: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/viewer.html?pdfurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tandfonline.com%2Fdoi%2Fpdf%2F10.3402%2Fmeo.v10i.4376&pdffilename=Strategies%20Resident%20Physicians%20Use%20to%20Manage%20Sleep%20Loss%20and%20Fatigue.pdf

They examine different sleep strategies by surveying residents.

Edwin thanks for sharing about your yoga practice and mentioning breathing. There are several studies that demonstrate how mindful breathing and controlled breathing have significant positive physiological effects and stress reduction. Here is a 2018 article on the topic: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6137615/
