Question #1
To improve food security:
Designating specific spaces for agriculture
Match identified infrastructure space with matching agricultural space, i.e. for every acre of infrastructure space, identify an agricultural space with the same acreage. If there is no matching agricultural space then a new infrastructure plan needs to be developed that gives priority to agriculture.
On a smaller scale, individual citizens and families should be educated and encouraged to plant crops in their own yards (if they have yards) or invest in methods of growing certain crops indoors.. This would ensure that individual families can sustain themselves.
Question #2
Barriers to eliminating measles:
Lack of interest by governments in surveilling and reporting outbreaks to WHO and UNICEF so that these organizations can concentrate efforts in the regions that need the most help
Clinicians have to be diligent about promoting the vaccine to their patient population.Nachet Williams-PrinceParticipantTo Dr. Spencer: A more plant-based diet can only be effective if we have the space to plant the plants. If agricultural spaces are being used up for infrastructure how are we going to have a sustainable plant-based diet. Also factor in global-warming and the destruction of rain forests, there is less precipitation to encourage the growth of plants. So a plan has to be developed beyond just promoting a plant based diet.
Nachet Williams-PrinceParticipantHello, I am Nachet Williams-Prince, PA-C. I am currently practicing in Obstetrics/Gynecology for the last thirteen years. I was born, raised and live and practice in the United States Virgin Islands. I work with a very large immigrant population from Santo Domingo and Haiti. I also live in an area prone to natural disasters. When we had our last major storms in 2017, I was placed in the position of having to manage the OB/GYN department solo because the MD was off-island when the storms hit and was unable to return. I have also had to be the solo OB/GYN provider for the first three months of the COVID pandemic. These experiences have led me to pursue this certificate to help better prepare me for leadership roles in times of disaster. Although we are part of the U.S., being on an island puts us in the vulnerable position of having to wait long periods of time before help can arrive from the mainland. I just want to be better prepared for these situations. I am very excited to be a part of this course.
